How Much Money to Give at a Hungarian Wedding in 2026

In short

  • Hungarians state the rule almost as arithmetic: a guest costs the couple about 50,000 forints, roughly €137, for the venue, food, drink and staff, and the gift should at least cover it.
  • The published 2026 bands give a friend 35,000 to 50,000 forints, a close friend 50,000 to 70,000, and a close relative or witness 80,000 to 150,000.
  • Read those two lines together: the friend band tops out at the seat. A couple giving the usual one and a half to two times a single gift covers about half to all of their two seats.
  • During the menyasszonytánc, the bride’s dance, guests pay 5,000 to 10,000 forints each for a turn, and most take it out of the envelope rather than adding it.

Hungary is one of the countries in our country-by-country comparison where the gift is openly measured against what your seat costs. What makes it unusual is that both numbers are published, and they do not quite meet.

The amounts

Your relationship to the couple Typical gift In euros
Colleague or distant acquaintance 20,000 to 35,000 Ft about €55 to €95
Friend 35,000 to 50,000 Ft about €95 to €137
Close friend 50,000 to 70,000 Ft about €137 to €190
Relative 50,000 to 80,000 Ft about €137 to €220
Close relative, bridesmaid or witness 80,000 to 150,000 Ft about €220 to €410

Bands from KözösAjándék’s 2026 guide, which adds that a couple invited together typically gives 1.5 to 2 times the individual amount. Euro figures at the Hungarian National Bank rate of 364.84 forints on 16 September 2026, rounded.

The seat figure comes from a different source. A ceremony master interviewed by Világgazdaság in February 2026 put it plainly: at an average Hungarian wedding, a gift of at least 50,000 forints a head is what it takes for a guest not to leave the couple out of pocket. The typical guest list, the same piece notes, is still 80 to 120 people. For a plus-one who barely knows the couple, it adds, 20,000 to 30,000 forints will not get anyone shown the door.

The floor the bands do not clear

Set the two sources side by side and the arithmetic does something neither of them says.

Who gives Typical gift Against the seats they occupy
A colleague, alone 20,000 to 35,000 Ft about 40% to 70% of one seat
A friend, alone 35,000 to 50,000 Ft about 70% to 100% of one seat
A close friend, alone 50,000 to 70,000 Ft about 100% to 140% of one seat
Two friends, as a couple 52,500 to 100,000 Ft about 50% to 100% of two seats
A close relative, alone 80,000 to 150,000 Ft about 160% to 300% of one seat

The unwritten rule says a guest covers their plate. The published band for a friend reaches the plate only at its very top, and the couple multiplier, which sounds generous, means two friends arriving together cover between half and all of what they cost. A wedding with forty friendly couples on the list is not financed by the friends. It is financed by the family.

None of this makes a friend who gives 40,000 forints a bad guest. It makes the rule a direction rather than a bill, which is how most Hungarians actually treat it.

Three envelopes at one wedding

Take a lagzi with a hundred guests in a county town, and three people deciding what to give.

Guest What they decide Dance money In the envelope In euros
Zsófi, a colleague, alone 30,000 Ft 5,000 Ft 25,000 Ft about €82 in total
Bence and Anna, friends, together 80,000 Ft 2 × 5,000 Ft 70,000 Ft about €219 in total
Kata, a cousin and witness 100,000 Ft 10,000 Ft 90,000 Ft about €274 in total

Zsófi covers a little over half her seat and nobody will think twice about it. Bence and Anna sit inside the couple band (1.5 to 2 times a friend’s 35,000 to 50,000) and cover 80% of their two seats. Kata gives the most and still lands at the lower end of the witness band, which is normal for a cousin in her twenties and would look thin from an aunt.

Now scale it up. A hundred guests who each gave exactly the 50,000-forint seat would hand the couple 5 million forints, about €13,700. Világgazdaság’s July round-up put a mid-range wedding of that size at 7 to 10 million. So even a perfect guest list, every single person paying for their own plate, covers only half to just over two thirds of the day. The seat figure prices the plate and the drinks, and the photographer, the band and the dress sit outside it.

That is the context a foreign guest rarely has. The envelope is not expected to pay for the wedding. It is expected not to make the hole bigger.

What a seat actually costs

The 50,000 figure is the whole seat: dinner, drinks, venue and staff. Világgazdaság’s July 2026 cost round-up puts a menu with a drinks package at 30,000 to 45,000 forints a head, a mid-range wedding of a hundred guests at 7 to 10 million, and the venue and catering together at 40 to 50% of the budget.

Two provincial restaurants published their own prices when we checked in September 2026, and they show how far apart two ordinary venues can sit. Kakas Vendéglő in Győr lists menus at 11,000 and 12,000 forints with a drinks package of 12,000 or 15,000, so 23,000 to 27,000 a head together. Kis Kulacs in Székesfehérvár lists 17,990 and 19,490 with unlimited drinks at 18,490, so 36,480 to 37,980.

The region and the venue move the seat far more than the published bands move the gift.

The bride’s dance

Late in the evening the call goes up, eladó a menyasszony, the bride is for sale, and guests queue to dance with her for a turn. Each one pays. Ceremony masters and vőfélyek asked by Világgazdaság put the going rate at 5,000 to 10,000 forints per person, and the February 2026 piece repeats the figure.

The practical question is whether that money is on top of the envelope or part of it. For most guests it is part of it: they decide on a total and take the dance money out of what goes in the envelope. It is paid on the spot, in notes, so bring it separately.

Civil ceremony, church, party: which invitation did you get?

A Hungarian wedding often has three parts: the polgári esküvő at the registry office, which is the legal marriage, a templomi esküvő in church for couples who want one, and the lagzi or lakodalom, the party. The envelope belongs to the party. An invitation to the ceremonies alone, without the reception, does not come with a seat to cover.

Small civil weddings with a dinner for twenty are more common than they used to be. There the seat is real but the guest list is short, and the envelope tends to sit closer to the top of the band. Hungarian readers will find the amounts for that case in mennyi pénzt adjunk polgári esküvőn.

The Hungarian words you will run into

Term What it is What it means for you
Nászajándék The wedding gift Usually money
Boríték The envelope Where the money goes; round sums are the custom
Lagzi or lakodalom The wedding party Where the envelope is given
Polgári esküvő The civil ceremony The legal marriage, often small
Templomi esküvő The church ceremony Optional, usually the same day
Menyasszonytánc The bride’s dance 5,000 to 10,000 Ft a turn, usually out of the envelope
Vőfély The traditional master of ceremonies Runs the evening, including the call for the dance
Tanú A witness Gives from the top band
Éjféli menü The midnight meal Often stuffed cabbage; the night is long

If you are the foreign guest

Bring cash in forints, and small notes as well as large. The envelope takes the large ones; the bride’s dance needs the small ones, on the spot.

Keep the sums round. Hungarian gift amounts are traditionally rounded, and 40,000 reads as a decision where 37,500 reads as change.

Scale it to the country, not to your salary. Hungary’s median net monthly pay was 436,200 forints in May 2026, according to the Central Statistical Office. A 50,000-forint envelope is more than a tenth of that, which is why the bands are what they are. A guest from Western Europe who gives far above them is not being rude, but the couple may feel they owe something back.

Count your travel if you flew in. The rule in you spent 900 euros to get there, do you still fill the envelope? holds: start from your usual gift, take off what the trip cost, and do not go below a third.

Ask one Hungarian at the table, quietly. The bands move by region and by family more than any guide can show. A village wedding in Szabolcs and a Budapest wedding in a design hotel have different seats and different expectations, and the guest next to you will know which one you are at. If you read Hungarian, the same question is answered for local guests in mennyi pénzt illik adni nászajándékba.

What we would give

As a friend invited alone, 40,000 to 50,000 forints, with 5,000 of it set aside for the dance. As a couple of friends, 80,000 to 100,000, which covers most or all of your two seats. As a colleague, 25,000 to 30,000, and nobody is counting. As a witness or a close relative, start at 100,000 and let the family’s habits decide how far up the band you go.

If the couple asked for nothing and you cannot afford the band, come anyway and give what you can. Hungarian weddings run late and loud, and an empty chair at a table of eight is noticed far more than a thin envelope.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do you give at a Hungarian wedding in 2026?

A friend typically gives 35,000 to 50,000 forints, a close friend 50,000 to 70,000, and a close relative or witness 80,000 to 150,000. A couple invited together gives about one and a half to two times the individual amount.

Is 50,000 forints a good wedding gift in Hungary?

Yes. It is about what a guest’s seat costs the couple at an average Hungarian wedding, and it sits at the top of the published band for a friend.

Does my gift have to cover my seat?

That is the unwritten rule, and a ceremony master quoted by Világgazdaság in 2026 puts the seat at about 50,000 forints. In practice many friends give a little less, and a couple giving together usually covers half to all of their two seats.

How much do you pay for the bride’s dance?

5,000 to 10,000 forints per person is the usual amount, and most guests take it out of their envelope rather than paying it on top.

Do couples give one gift or two?

One, typically one and a half to two times what a single guest would give.

What if I am only invited to the civil ceremony?

Then there is no seat at the party to cover, and the envelope rule does not apply. A card and your good wishes are enough.

Can I transfer the money instead of bringing cash?

Cash in an envelope at the party is the norm, and the bride’s dance is paid in notes on the spot. If you are sending money from outside Hungary, what each method costs is in envelope or bank transfer.
